Rising Above: Nisshaa Muniandy’s Journey of Resilience and Hope

At the age of seven, Nisshaa Muniandy was told she had dystonia and epilepsy, two formidable neurological conditions that would challenge her throughout her life. Dystonia caused these involuntary muscle contractions that led to painful spasms, while epilepsy brought on unpredictable seizures. These ailments didn't just impact her physically but also made her a target for bullying at school. It threw her into a spiral of emotional turmoil and even thoughts of suicide.

Have you ever been in a moment where you felt you had no chance of winning?

However, in the face of these insurmountable woes, Nisshaa's spirit did not break. She started reclaiming her self-worth through multiple counselling sessions and a transformative confidence-building course. She learned how to challenge the negativity, set the right goals, and build a supportive network. Through this journey, she could stand firm, speak up and take risks under adversity. Her newfound self-assuredness shone through when she became a fulfilling English teacher at a private school in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

If you were given the chance to change your life, what would be your first step?

Nisshaa embraced the digital age and turned to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to share her insights and experiences. She uses these platforms, with over 160,000 likes on TikTok and more than 30,000 followers on Instagram, to educate others about disability and inclusion. Talking frankly about her battles, like being rejected because of her illness, encourages others who are going through the same things to fight and do what they want to do no matter what.

If you knew your story could inspire someone else, what would you share with the world?

Additionally, Nisshaa is a poet who has composed over 100 poems on themes of isolation, identity, resilience, and hope. She believes in the healing power of poetry and hopes people understand dystonia better by showing them that they're not alone. In July 2023, Nisshaa raised RM113,010 through online crowdfunding for a deep brain stimulation surgery, a procedure to lessen the severity of her dystonia symptoms. It's a personal victory but also a beacon of hope for others facing similar battles.

Nisshaa's journey reminds us that the human spirit can withstand much more than you'd think. Even when life throws you a curveball, you can still be strong!
